Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you might want to know before (or after) downloading Grimoire. Something missing? Write to support@grimoirehq.com.
What is Grimoire?
Grimoire is a local-first Markdown editor for macOS, built for writers, researchers, and knowledge workers. It stores your notes as plain Markdown files on your own machine and adds wikilinks, backlinks, full-text search, split panes, tabs, and a knowledge graph on top.
Is Grimoire free?
Yes. The editor is free to download and use — unlimited notes and vaults, wikilinks, backlinks, search, the knowledge graph, split panes, and tabs, with no account required. Grimoire Pro ($5/month or $48/year) adds optional cloud sync across devices, version history, and priority support.
Where are my notes stored?
On your device, as plain Markdown files in a folder you choose (your vault). Grimoire works fully offline and never sends your notes anywhere unless you explicitly enable the optional Sync service.
What file format does Grimoire use?
Standard Markdown (.md) files in ordinary folders. There is no proprietary database and no lock-in — you can open, edit, back up, or migrate your notes with any other tool at any time.
Can I open an existing folder of Markdown notes?
Yes. Any folder of Markdown files can be opened as a Grimoire vault, including notes exported from or shared with other Markdown apps. Grimoire uses the common [[wikilink]] syntax for linking notes.
Does Grimoire work with Claude or other AI assistants?
Yes. The free Grimoire MCP plugin connects your vault to Claude Desktop via the Model Context Protocol. Claude can search your notes, read and write files, and follow backlinks — while your vault stays on your machine. See the Claude & MCP page for details.
What platforms does Grimoire run on?
Grimoire runs on macOS 13 or later, with native builds for both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. It is currently in public beta.
Do I need an account to use Grimoire?
No. Download the app and start writing — no account, sign-up, or internet connection required. An account is only needed if you subscribe to the optional Pro sync service.
How does Grimoire Sync handle privacy?
Sync is opt-in. If enabled, your vault files are transmitted over HTTPS and stored on Grimoire servers solely to sync them to your other devices — they are never read, analyzed, indexed, or shared. Without Sync, your notes never leave your machine. Full details in the privacy policy.
Why is it called Grimoire?
A grimoire (grim·wahr, /ɡrɪmˈwɑːr/) is a book of collected knowledge — spells, observations, and secrets accumulated over time. Your notes deserve to be treated the same way.
