Introducing Grimoire: A Local-First Markdown Editor for Mac

A grimoire is a book of collected knowledge — spells, observations, and secrets accumulated over time. We think your notes deserve to be treated the same way, which is why we built Grimoire: a local-first Markdown editor for macOS, now in public beta.

What Grimoire is

Grimoire is a desktop editor for writers, researchers, and knowledge workers. It stores your notes as plain Markdown files in a folder you choose — your vault — and layers the tools of a modern knowledge base on top:

• Wikilinks and backlinks. Link notes with [[note name]] syntax; every connection is tracked in both directions.
• Full-text search. Find anything across the vault by content, filename, tag, or wikilink reference.
• Knowledge graph. See your notes as a map of connected ideas, with clusters forming as your thinking develops.
• Split panes and tabs. Keep your working set open, side by side, with live Markdown preview.

What Grimoire refuses to do

Grimoire will not hold your notes hostage. There is no proprietary database, no required account, and no server between you and your files. The app works fully offline, and any folder of Markdown files — including notes from other apps — opens as a vault.

The editor is free. If you want your vault on multiple devices, Grimoire Pro adds automatic cloud sync and version history for $5/month or $48/year — and even then, your files are stored only to sync them, never read or analyzed. See the pricing page for details.

Claude, meet your vault

Grimoire also ships a free MCP plugin that connects your vault to Claude Desktop through the Model Context Protocol. Claude can search your notes, read and write files, and follow backlinks — all locally, without your vault leaving your machine.
